Figure 7 - An example of mutator-directed hypermutation in the fungus, Aspergillus nidulans, cultured under  epigenetic stress influenced  through normal culture temperature.. This colony was from a group of colonies under stress, each producing many yellow, mutant sectors of increased growth rate.  After various genetic crosses, the colonies were obtained from newly generated  or young spores produced by green, colonial sectors. The newly generated state of the spores also enabled the mutator-induced, very high mutagenecity within the derived colonies.  (Lieber, 1972, Ph.D. Thesis,  University of Sheffield, U.K.)
